Randolph Rec Center has been CLOSED suddenly more rec centers will be closed within 3 years
The Montgomery County Department of Parks has decided that the Randolph Hills Recreation Center is "under-used", "unprofitable" and in need of repairs, therefore they plan to demolish the building - they do NOT plan to replace the building. In 1995 an evaluation of the Randolph Rec Center found possible rotted sill plates, no repairs were made. Now those same "rotted sill plates" are the justification for closing the building as SUDDENLY (after 12 years) unsafe for occupancy. The Viers Mill and Ken-Gar Recreation Centers are on the "Evaluate and Market" list (see the MCDPP Staff Recommendations link below for further details). This means if they are found unprofitable and under-used, they, and many others, will go also.
At the same time the MC Department of Park and Planning is moving forward with plans to erect a new 80 million dollar Headquarters Building called "Silverplace" (or should we call it the "Silver Palace"?) or read more in their Bulletin or in a Washington Post article about the project. A fraction of the money all ready spent on just planning this new building could have funded extensive repair and maintenance for Recreation Buildings. A fraction of the cost of this glittering new building would cover the repair and maintenance for all Recreation Buildings. Of note is that for years while MCPP, in their budget, would routinely earmark funds for repair and maintenance of playgrounds and tennis courts, they would NOT earkmark funds for repair and maintenance of Recreation Centers...
